LIB DEMS CALL FOR WESTERN BYPASS

by markjewell on 1 July, 2012

Liberal Democrat County Councillors in Preston have called for a Western Bypass.

County Councillors Bill Winlow and Mark Jewell have called for a Western Bypass to support the infrastructure for the building of 3,800 new homes across Cottam and the M55 Corridor of North West Preston.

Within their responses to the ‘Sites for Preston: Preferred Options’ Consultation they identified that the current infrastructure does not have the capacity to support these proposed developments.

County Councillor Bill Winlow, leader of the Lib Dem group at County Hall said, “Plans for such improvements need to be in place before any housing developments are granted planning permission.” Within his response he also identified that the transport infrastructure proposals should include a railway station for Cottam and Ingol on Tom Benson Way and possibly an additional junction on the M55.

County Councillor Mark Jewell added, ” Up front funding of the bypass will be an issue and as such, Lancashire County Council need to specify how and when it will increase road capacity to support these developments from the start to their completion.”

The comments were made in response to the Preston Local Development Framework-Sites for Preston:Preferred Options Consultation. The consultation  closes on 2nd July.

Notes

It is anticipated that approximately 1,300 homes could be delivered at the proposed Cottam sites.

The North West Preston site is described as Greenfield land south of the M55 STRETCHING FROM THE Cottam site to the west to land north of eastway/south of the M55 to the east. In total the area will contribute up to 2,500 dwellings over the plan period.
