Olympic Torch Heads for Preston

With the Olympic torch landing on British soil today it will be only two weeks away from arriving in Lancashire. The Olympic torch will be carried 8,000 miles by 8,000 bearers in a 70 day relay ending at the Olympic Park.

Following a brief glimpse of the torch on 1st June in Chorley, it will return to Lancashire on 22nd and 23rd June.

It will arrive in Preston on June 23rd at 07:53 on Blackpool Road from St Andrews Avenue junction in County Councillor Mark Jewell’s district. It will continue along Blackpool Road turning right onto Tulketh Brow and down onto Watery Lane. It will then move onto Fylde Road, past the University and onto Corporation Street on the way into the City centre. The torch will then come right down Fishergate before leaving Preston via New Hall Lane.

The torchbearers playing their part on carrying the flame through Preston on June 23rd will include Ja Yoo Choi, the youngest at 21 and Maureen Whitman, the oldest at 65.

Ya Yoo Choi comes from Seoul and is now studying to become a teacher.

Maureen Whitman, or “Dynamo Mo” as she is known, is an inspiration to generationsof local people with her dedication and commitment to sporting activity.

County Councillor Mark Jewell said, “The Olympic Torch relay through Preston will really help to bring the Olympic Games to life within the City and across the Country.”
