2012 Apprenticeship Placements for Lancashire

by markjewell on 8 February, 2012

Liberal Democrats at Lancashire County Council are proposing to help fund 2012 apprenticeship placements throughout Lancashire.

Business Spokesperson for the group, County Councillor Mark Jewell said, “In a year with the Preston Guild, that has benefits throughout Lancashire, we are committed to ensuring Lancashire based firms have the skills necessary to grow. Not only is this good for the economy of Lancashire, but it presents opportunities for individuals to obtain the skills for rewarding careers.”

Under their budget proposals, Liberal Democrats will fund 50% of the salary of the first 6 months of an apprenticeship. Subsequent years will also be part funded by the County.

CC Mark Jewell explained, “Generally, small and medium sized companies struggle to find and fund apprenticeships. We are proposing a package of measures that help SMEs with advice whilst offering an incentive payment to take on their first apprentice in 2012/13. Typically this would be about £1,300. The scheme will also be open to veterans who wish to retrain when returning to civilian life.”

When taken in the context of government funded apprenticeship schemes, we are providing extra help to enable small businesses to hire their first apprentices. This is one of a number of proposals we will be putting forward to reflect that Lancashire is open for business. Lancashire County Council have a role to play in working with local firms to help boost jobs and growth.”

“With every £1 of public money delivering a return of some £40 to the wider economy, this is a sound investment in the future of the County.”

In a week in which the fifth annual apprenticeship week was announced by business secretary Vince Cable, these proposals will provide a boost to Lancashire firms to get ahead.
