Local Liberal Democrats have welcomed Nick Cleggs’ announcement that infants will be getting free school meals from next September.

With thousands of parents across Lancashire feeling the pinch on their household finances this could save them over £400 a year per child at infants.

Mark Jewell commented, “This will also benefit those infants who are in poverty, but do not currently qualify for free school meals often because their parents are in work.”

“A hot healthy meal at lunchtime will help raise school standards, provide for a better diet for many and reduce the stigma of free school meals. Together with free childcare and the pupil premium, Lib Dems are giving every child the chance in life they deserve.”
