Russell Worthington hands over the keys to the Boxing Club.

The Larches and Savick Boxing Club is set to reopen after receiving the keys to its new building.

The new building is a £350,000 purpose built facility that has been sponsored by NW based construction company, Marcus Worthington.

The centre has a competition size boxing ring together with a fully equipped gym and workout area, male and female changing facilities and showers. It has been built to environmentally friendly standards and will have full access for people with disabilities.

Russell Worthington, Development Director at the company said, “We have been closely involved in this project for the past four years so it is wonderful to see that work on the new facility has now been completed and that we can hand the building back to the Boxing Club.”

“The new premises will be one of the most advanced in the North West, combining state of the art sporting equipment with a modern, purpose built, environmentally friendly building. The project shows just what can be achieved when the private sector, the voluntary sector and the public sector work together.”

The clubs Treasurer, Mark Jewell added, “It was the commitment made by Marcus Worthington’s that enabled us to make bids to the Amateur Boxing Association and Sport England for the balance of the rebuild costs. I must acknowledge the role of Steve Daly and his team from the sports development team at PCC for their help in making these bids.”

The club was awarded £75,000 from the ABAE and £50,000 from Sport England. It has been designated a regional centre of boxing excellence by the ABAE.

Womans bantamweight EU champion, Lisa Whitside, from the Larches and Savick Boxing Club said, “We are really proud of what we have been able to achieve at the club so far, but these new facilities will enable us to be amongst the best in the Country.”

Joe Kilshaw, Chairman of the club, was delighted at receiving the keys. He said, “We are all very excited at opening again. We really outgrew the previous building, but this new building will enable us to introduce more young people to the sport and they will have access to some of the best boxing facilities around. This is a real asset for the whole community who can also join the club for boxing fitness training if they do not want to get into the ring.”
