Fairer decision making starts at County Hall

Liberal Democrat changes to the way decisions are scrutinised at County Hall have been made.

With no party winning an overall majority at the elections in May, Liberal Democrats called to scrap the cabinet system in favour of a fairer committee lead system instead. Liberal Democrats called for all political parties to have a say in the important decisions affecting residents across Lancashire.

An Executive scrutiny committee and a Budgetary Scrutiny Working Group have been formed. Lib Dem leader at County Hall, County Councillor Bill Winlow has been appointed as Chairman of the Executive Scrutiny Committee.

Preston campaigner, Mark Jewell said, “Whilst the detail of this is probably quite dull for a lot of people it is an important change for fairer council decisions. We have seen how on Preston City Council, where Labour have a majority they have politicised organisations like Gateway by appointing Labour Councillors to all the political position on the board. When Gateway was set up it was for one position per party so that board decisions would not be politicised.

These changes at County Hall are the first steps to the largely Lib Dem drafted agreement with Labour being implemented and providing for a fairer Lancashire.
